Spirits

We love that the word “spirit” is used to identify distilled products: what you’re getting in the glass represents the very essence of the products used to make them.  Great whisk(e)y is the true embodiement of the grain with which it is produced.  Elite cognac represents the purest character of great grapes.  Furthermore, many spirits were originally christened as a term celebrating it as a “water of life”.  Eau de vie is French for water of life.  The word whiskey is a shortened version of usquebach, meaning “water of life” in Gaelic.  Aqua Vitae, a term used to describe spirits since the 14th century, is Latin for…you guessed it, “water of life”

The bottles on our back bar have, collectively, amazing stories to tell, some centuries old.  These are stories of multiple generations of families, of closely-guarded recipes through international conflict, of evolving tastes and obsessions of master distillers from all over the world.

The world of spirits is a fascinating study, and one we hope you will enjoy as much as we do.  If there is something on our bar you’re unfamiliar with, we’d love to have you ask and allow us to walk you through its rich history and production and to pour you a taste.
